Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Marine plastic debris in various forms, such as beads, pellets, and fibers, is now pervasive in global oceans and coastal zones. These micro- and nanoplastics are continuously input from lands to seas via surface runoffs and various human activities, and are continuously accumulating in our earth. Wide geographical distributions of microplastics can be found both horizontally (in every ocean) and vertically (from surface seawater to deep-sea sediments). The hazard of microplastics is not just physically entrapping or affecting organisms; they are also a vector of various toxic substances (e.g., persistent organic pollutants and heavy metals). Moreover, they threaten the habitats of different marine eco-systems as well as the health of each living organism via food webs. As a result, the fates and distributions of this anthropogenic microplastic pollution requires more attention and further study. This Special Issue calls for more scientific investigations to update current trends as well as future challenges (such as how to fulfill Sustainable Development Goal 14) in this field.
