Special Issue Information

The term prosthesis is defined as “a device that aims to replace a missing part of the body”. Unfortunately, the critical loss of a part of the body can be the result of various issues, from concerns as small as those regarding teeth to severe injuries that affect a structure (such as arms, legs, and joints) and, at worst, an entire organ (such as the eye). Medicine has long aimed to heal every pathological process, and when this is not possible, to substitute the lost or dysfunctional anatomical structure and provide the patient with the possibility of conducting their life without essential limitations. This continuous progress is profound in every branch of medicine. The development of new techniques and materials is even more rapid, and will become pivotal in the medical future. For example, the loss of hearing is addressed by cochlear prostheses that exhibit the same effectiveness even after a reduction in their dimensions, and arm or leg amputations can be replaced with prostheses that restore the physiological function of the natural limb. These solutions would be impossible without the rapid development of new materials and technologies that permit the complete substitution of missing parts. Prior to a large-scale diffusion, the technological development and reliability of such novel materials and techniques must be adequately tested and experimented. This Special Issue aims to provide an overview of all studies addressing the development of effective new materials and technologies that aid in the replacement of the function or structure of a lost part of the body.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
