Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The renewable energy field has attracted the attention of the researchers and the industrials communities these last decades, and a variety of optimization technologies have been introduced. Most of these technologies are based on improvements through mechanical engineering and physics. However, the continuous need for energy efficiency, productivity and cost-effectiveness have pushed towards the application of new renewable energy strategies inspired from other research fields. Recently, it has been proved that applying Internet of Thing (IoT) can optimize the management of the renewable energy resources by combining sensors and data analytics.

Indeed, the renewable energy systems based on IoT can facilitate the communication between the renewable energy appliances to optimize the energy efficiency. For example, the energy regeneration will be switched from solar to wind turbine in a particularly cloudy day with a lot of wind. On the other side, IoT analytics have a significant effect on renewable energy outperforming. For instance, extracting data from solar panels may help to speed up the maintenance process and reduce the downtime.

The aim of this Special Issue (SI) is to address both of innovative developments resorting to the state-of-the-art technologies and ideas in areas related to advanced internet of things for renewable energy optimization. The SI is seeking the latest findings from research and ongoing projects relevant to IoT smart application for energy conservation. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • IoT technologies for renewable energy
  • Advanced data analytics for energy conservation systems
  • Big data analysis and mining for renewable energy
  • IoT based energy systems for industry 4.0 and smart cities

Selected authors from IAPE’19 conference will be invited to submit their paper to the SI. We also strongly encourage researchers unable to participate in the conferences to submit articles for the SI. The CFP of the SI will be broadcasted throw the professional networks of the Guest Editors.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the next generation of internet-connected information communication technologies (ICT). IoT typically integrates supply chain activities to enhance green supply chain performance (GSCP). Since every organization has different IoT capabilities in comparison with other organizations, GSCP can enable supply chain integration activities for enhanced performance. The implementation of an IoT system can reduce the consumption of organizational resources like energy, electricity, and time and can increase the operational speed to gain better logistics and, ultimately, improved supply chain performance. This study has developed and empirically tested the relationship between IoT capabilities, energy consumption behavior (ECB), supply chain integration, green training (GT), and supply chain practices. Such a multidisciplinary relationship has not previously been established in the literature. The proposed study can fulfill the literature gap and opens new horizons for interdisciplinary research. Data used in this study are collected through offline and online survey methods. A total number of 250 out of 400 respondents participated in the survey. Data has been analyzed through partial least square—structure equation modeling (PLS—SEM) technique. The results of this study empirically test the developed model. IoT has a positive effect on supplier integration (SI), and customer integration (CI). Furthermore, SI and CI have a mediating role between IoT and GSCP, and GT has a positive impact on GSCP. It is concluded that the implementation of IoT can integrate CI and SI to increase GSCP. GT and ECB can ultimately improve GSCP. Additionally, the use of technology and GT can motivate employees to save energy and protect the environment to increase GSCP. Full article
