Pulmonary Biopsy in the Diagnosis of Different Lung Diseases

If the clinical evaluation, imaging and laboratory results are inconclusive, lung histopathology may be needed to reach a specific lung diagnosis. Lung biopsy may be indicated in the evaluation of nodular disease, diffuse infiltrative diseases and sometimes, suspected infection. Furthermore, lung biopsy is performed in the evaluation of suspected malignancy and suspected rejection after lung transplantation. A lung biopsy is performed when a lung lesion is suspicious for lung cancer, or when cancer cannot be distinguished from another disease, such as aspergillosis. Lung biopsy also plays a role in the diagnosis of interstitial lung disease. Once reached the laboratory, biological biopsy samples of tissue are processed to obtain histological preparations suitable for diagnostic purposes. For a first morphological evaluation they may be stained with hematoxylin-eosin. An accurate evaluation of the histological preparation will therefore be necessary for a correct differential diagnostic classification.

The aim of this special issue is to underline the clinical role that lung biopsy plays in pulmonary diseases. In line with the journal’s mission—IJMS is a journal of molecular science; therefore, pure clinical studies will not be suitable but clinical submissions with biomolecular experiments are welcomed. Our focus is on histology and cytology (in vitro and in vivo studies) evaluations.
