Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Most radiation-effects research has focused on the effects of exposures to external radiation. However, it is doses received from internally deposited radionuclides that contribute most to the total effective dose received by members of the public. In this respect lung doses from internally deposited radon progeny are most important. Occupational and medical exposures have been/are also commonly dominated by intakes of radionuclides including radium, uranium, thorium, gallium, technetium, and tritium isotopes. Moreover, new targeted radiotherapy methods employ radionuclides—often attached to antibodies to deliver specific local doses. Epidemiological studies of the impact of exposures to internally deposited radionuclides have been augmented by toxicology studies using animals. Together, these provide a base for our ongoing understanding of the effects of internal emitters and for the development of adverse outcome pathways. This Special Issue will highlight the latest research on lower-dose and lower-dose-rate effects, and how these may modify metabolic processes to either inhibit or promote disease—including cancer. We invite research articles presenting novel results, reviews, and/or perspectives addressing knowledge in this area. We look forward to your valuable contributions.

Suitable topics include, but are not limited to:

  • DNA damage and subsequent mutagenesis and carcinogenesis
  • Radioadaptive responses and hormetic effects of radionuclides
  • Radionuclide deposition patterns within tissues and organs as a determinant of health risk
  • Molecular biomarkers of exposure and bioindicators of health risks
  • Biological effects resulting in therapeutic benefits and risk
  • Dose response and biological dosimetry
  • Radionuclide-specific effects
  • Results of epidemiology and life-span studies
  • Molecular epidemiology
  • Consolidation of the knowledge of molecular mechanisms within the concept of adverse outcome pathways (AOP).

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
