Dear Colleagues,

Antenna technology stands as the vanguard of the ever-evolving landscape in wireless communication systems, reshaping the very fabric of how we interact with the digital world. The relentless pursuit of faster, more reliable, and ubiquitous connectivity has placed antennas at the forefront of modern technology. From the rapid deployment of 5G networks, promising unprecedented data speeds and reduced latency, the seamless integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) devices into our daily lives, to enabling seamless video conferencing and multimedia streaming on our smartphones, and to supporting the complex network architectures of smart cities, antennas have facilitated the interconnectedness of our modern society. The interconnectedness and interdependence of our world only increases, and thus, the demand for cutting-edge antenna designs continues to grow as well, motivating researchers and engineers to explore innovative concepts.

This Special Issue seeks to collate articles on the state-of-the-art antenna technologies, and invites researchers to share their latest breakthroughs and insights, both theoretical advancements and practical applications, that will enhance our understanding of the technological landscape. Suggested themes include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Multiband and wideband antennas for spectrum efficiency;
  • Metamaterials and metasurfaces in antenna engineering;
  • Novel approaches to antenna implementations;
  • Antenna testing, characterization, and measurement techniques;
  • Antenna solutions for Internet-of-Things (IoT) and sensor networks;
  • Antenna miniaturization techniques: challenges and innovations;
  • Antenna optimization using artificial intelligence techniques;
  • Phased array antennas; design, concept and signal processing;
  • Antenna designs for satellite and autonomous communications;
  • Compact and low-profile antenna solutions for iot and wearable devices;
  • Advanced antenna designs for massive mimo, mmwave, and beamforming;
  • Bio-inspired and biomedical antennas: applications in healthcare and sensing;
  • Reconfigurable, multi-functional, and adaptive antennas;
  • Antenna designs for 5G, 6G, and beyond: mm-wave, terahertz and nano antennas;
  • Testing and characterization techniques in antennas;
  • On-chip and integrated antennas: advancements and applications;
  • Propagation modeling and channel characterization;
  • Advanced algorithms of array analysis and synthesis;
  • Time-domain and frequency-domain characterization of antennas;
  • Antenna measurements in complex and challenging environments.

Please note that submissions should adhere to the standards of our journal and should not have been submitted or published elsewhere. Extended versions of conference papers with significant improvement (minimal of over 50%) can be considered for publication in this Special Issue.

This paper provides an overview of fractal antennas and metasurfaces, exploring their design principles, performance, and applications. Fractal antennas, incorporating self-similar geometric shapes, offer several advantages, such as their multiband operation, compact size, and improved performance. Metasurfaces, on the other hand, are two-dimensional structures composed of subwavelength unit cells and are designed to achieve advantageous and unusual electromagnetic properties by enabling precise control over electromagnetic waves. This paper discusses the fundamental concepts of fractal antennas and metasurfaces, compares their characteristics, and presents the latest advances in research.
