Cover Story (view full-size image):
Streptococcus suis, an emerging zoonotic pathogen, is a common coloniser of the respiratory tract of pigs. It can cause invasive disease with symptoms such as pneumonia, arthritis, meningitis, endocarditis and acute sepsis. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and its metabolites play an important regulatory role in different biological processes of the host, such as inflammation and immune activation. Induction of COX-2 and the production of its metabolite prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) were demonstrated in a porcine precision-cut lung slice model infected with S. suis. The time-dependent induction of COX-2 in the infected tissue, with a strong signal mainly in bronchial fibroblasts, resulted in increased PGE2 levels. Furthermore, the pore-forming toxin suilysin played an important role in this process. View this paper
